Area Service Manager - Permanent - Full Time Contract

Ability West provides a wide range of high-quality services to children and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism across Galway City and County. Services provided are day, residential, short breaks, community supports, rehabilitative training and multi-disciplinary supports.

The Role:


The Area Service Manager will be responsible for the overall management and development of the services within their region and to ensure efficient and effective management and leadership within the Team.

Leadership in the delivery of person centred, safe and rights based services to adults and children in delegated Ability West centres. These include residential, respite and day services, supported self-directed living programmes and outreach services. Contribution towards the planning of service delivery in line with relevant legislation and national standards e.g., HSE New Directions, HIQA. Management responsibilities with frontline managers across several services. Collaboration and consultation with the Director of Operational Supports and Services and Director of Clinical Supports and Services in planning and implementing services that are effective in meeting the needs of adults and children availing of services.

Essential Criteria:


  1. A recognised third level qualification in the health and social care area e.g., Nursing, Social Care, Allied Health Professionals, Managerial, etc.
  2. Level 6 Management qualification
  3. A minimum of 5 years post qualified relevant experience, preferably in the area of intellectual disability and/or autism.
  4. A proven track record of managing residential, respite and day services.
  5. Knowledge and competency of relevant legislation and current best practice in the delivery of person-centered care, safe and rights based services.
  6. Ability to demonstrate efficient and effective leadership, management, and service improvement skills.
  7. A proven track record of budget development and financial management.
  8. Experience of using IT packages, system programmes and report writing.
  9. Full current driving license with access to your own vehicle (mileage will be paid at the appropriate rate).
  10. Excellent working knowledge of legislative/regulatory requirements as required by the role.
