ASD Role


The role of an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) support worker in a third-level setting, is to ensure that students with ASD receive the necessary support to succeed academically, socially, and personally.

Their responsibilities are tailored to address the unique challenges faced by students with ASD in that environment.

Requirements

Communication Facilitation:
Supporting students in communicating effectively with lecturers, peers, and administrative staff.

Social Interaction Support:

Providing opportunities for social skill development, facilitating participation in group work, and encouraging involvement in social activities on campus.


Managing Stress and Anxiety:
Helping students manage stress and anxiety related to academic pressures, examinations and social interactions by referring to Student Support Services

Orientation and Mobility Support:
Assisting students in becoming familiar with the campus layout, including classrooms, libraries, and other facilities.

Access to Resources:
Ensuring students have access to necessary resources, such as quiet study areas, sensory-friendly spaces, and disability support services.

Coordinating Services:
Collaborating with disability services, counselling centres, and other university departments to coordinate comprehensive student support.

Peer Mentoring:

Encourage students to access the Peer Mentor programme, which allows students with ASD to receive support and guidance from their peers.


Staying Informed:
Keeping up-to-date with the latest research, best practices, and developments in the field of ASD and higher education.
