Job Description

Context The School of Education seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in Drama and Theatre. Drama and Theatre in Education, and creative arts practices are considered to be of particular importance for the future of society, and are a specific focus of research, policy development and practice in the School of Education in Trinity. Learning in, through and about drama and theatre in education, including arts integration, enhances learning in the art forms of drama and theatre and in other subject and skill areas. The School of Education has identified in its Strategic Plan thatarts activities and experiences, while maintaining the integrity of the artistic disciplines, should be meaningful to participants.Drama and theatre experiences that recognise children and young peoples active role in learning offer many opportunities for them to construct and elaborate meaning communicated through language and other expressive modes. The successful candidate will be a specialist in drama and theatre in education but have an interest in advocating for the inclusion of all art forms (dance, drama, music, visual and fine arts, literature and creative writing) across the spectrum of formal and non-formal education, throughout the life span. The work of the School reflects a strong emphasis on postgraduate education and the development of a strong research profile. In teaching and research, this post offers the opportunity to contribute to and shape future fields of endeavour and innovation within the School. To this end, the successful candidate will undertake postgraduate teaching and research individually and collaboratively alongside programme coordinators and a vibrant team of colleagues working in the field of arts education.The Arts Education Research Group(AERG) has a developing programme of activities across the arts generally, with several areas of specialism. It is concerned with research into the policy and practice of arts and aesthetic education. It is particularly interested in teaching and learning issues with respect to inclusion and special education. It is also currently building networks to bridge the arts and sciences, and exploring ways in which the two can inter-relate in policy and practice. The Purpose of the Role The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research, and supervision duties across the School, and will have an active programme of research indrama and theatre in education that will contribute to the international profile of the School. The post ofAssistant Professor inDrama and Theatre in Educationis a replacement post for a staff member seconded to a different role for a period of 5 years.The successful candidate will co-ordinate the M.Ed. in Drama in Education. They will teach and supervise on this course and will contribute to the Schools other taught and research programmes including supervision at masters and doctoral levels. The post-holder will undertake research, knowledge generation and dissemination in the field of drama and theatre in education, including arts integration. Main Responsibilities Principal Duties of the Post Teaching Contribute to teaching on relevant modules for ASIAP, the Professional Master in Education (PME), M.Ed., D.Ed., Ph.D.and other School of Education programmes, such as CPD and micro credentials Teaching, reviewing and redesigningexisting modules related todrama and theatre in education. On-going innovation in approaches to teaching, activity-based student learning and assessment. Assessment of student course work. Developing new strands of activity indrama and theatre in education, for example, on the PME, M.Ed. and at doctoral level. School Placement Lead and contribute to the school placement supervision team indrama and theatre in education. Research Research and knowledge generation within, but not limited to the field ofdrama and theatre in education. Contributing to the arts education research agenda within the School, and specifically within the candidates area of subject knowledge expertise. Besides research in the specific areas of arts education, we are particularly interested in research into broader topics, especially as they link to parallel developments in policy discourse, arts and society, integration of artistic and aesthetic literacy across the curriculum, technology and e-learning, artistic knowing, embodied cognition and related disciplines, etc. Engaging with policy makers and organisations in the field ofdrama and theatre in education, and when appropriate initiating nationaland international research projects. Disseminating knowledge generated through research in national and international publications. Presenting at relevant conferences nationally and internationally. Supervision of post-graduate and doctoral research students. Sourcing research funding. Person Requirements Qualifications (essential) Doctoral qualification preferably in the area ofDrama or Theatre in Education or a related discipline Qualifications (desirable) A professional teaching qualification. A background in inclusive arts education. Knowledge & Experience The successful candidate will be expected to clearly demonstrate the following: Knowledge of recent developments and research in the field ofdrama, theatre and arts educationin Ireland; Experience in designing, planning and implementing academic programmes fordrama and theatrelearning; Experience of facilitating seminars, presentations, workshops etc.; An existing research portfolio and research experience in the field ofdrama and theatre in education. An understanding of what constitutes good professional learning and research in drama, theatre and arts teacher education. Effective communicator across a range of audiences and contexts.
