Job Description

The role of Clinical Nurse Manager 1 Endoscopy is responsible for the provision of quality service in line with standards of Endoscopy nursing practice. As a key member of the frontline management team, the CNM1 in Endoscopy will demonstrate managerial and leadership skills and facilitate effective communication with colleagues in the hospital. The position requires a participative approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives. The CNM 1 will assist the CNM 3 with service planning, co-ordinating, and managing activity, schedules and resources within the clinical area. Key Responsibilities Operations Be responsible for the co-ordination, assessment, planning, implementation, and review of care. Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct as laid down by the Nursing Midwifery Board Ireland and Professional Clinical Guidelines. In the absence of the CNM 3, manage the overall daily functions of the department, ensuring effective, efficient and quality specialist nursing care. Manage own patient caseload in accordance with the needs of the department. Plan specialist nursing service, innovations and developments. Ensure that nursing care is based on the latest research findings and constitutes best practice. Develop close links with other healthcare facilities relevant to the delivery and enhancement of services. Monitor complaints and investigate any nursing and clinical complaints, taking corrective and preventative action as appropriate. Maintain nursing records in accordance with local service and professional standards. Contribute to the development and maintenance of nursing standards, protocols and guidelines consistent with the highest standards of patient care. Maintain professional standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics and legislation. Facilitate effective communication with patients, relatives, visitors and the multi-disciplinary team. Communicate and develop effective relationships with Consultant colleagues, Clinical Nurse Managers and other relevant hospital staff. Identify opportunities for the development of services that will improve the care of patients. Ensure that systems for the provision of clinical and non-clinical services are satisfactory and economically utilized. In conjunction with CNM3 undertake an annual review of nursing services including the preparation of an annual report. Ensure that all staff within the ward are familiar with the plan for management of critical incidents. Leadership and Management Provide clinical and management leadership for Staff Nurses and support staff. Work within the code of Professional Conduct for Nurses and provide strong professional leadership and direction for nursing services. Promote an environment that enhances staff retention and promotes good industrial relations. Maintain a high level of staff morale, promoting good communication and team spirit. Play a role in the recruitment and selection of nursing and support staff. Ensure that all new nursing and support staff receive an adequate orientation and induction programme. Support staff nurses with annual reviews and the development of personal development plans. Assist in providing a duty roster that ensures resources are deployed effectively. Comply with all HR system and policy requirements. Contribute to the formal mechanism for communication among the nursing team. Learning and Education In conjunction with the CNM 3, provide professional development opportunities for all nursing and support staff. Contribute to the requirements of NMBI for the practice of professional nursing. Maintain accurate records of all study leave and education resources used. Implement an enhanced staff competence assessment relevant to the Unit/Ward. Facilitate study days and leave for nurses and support staff. Quality Improvement and Risk Management Ensure compliance with all relevant guidelines, policies, procedures and regulatory requirements. Participate in the requirements of the Joint Advisory Group (JAG) accreditation process. Encourage continuous review and evaluation of policies and practices through regular audit programmes. Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement across the department. Contribute to the setting and monitoring of core objectives and key performance indicators for the service. Participate in the hospital's risk management programme. Promote the delivery of a high standard of care to all patients. Work with members of the Multidisciplinary team in devising Standard Operating Procedures for the development of the Unit. Provide clinical nursing leadership in addressing ethical and quality of service issues. Develop a culture of safety, promoting positive reporting of incidents. The Clinical Nurse Manager 1 will perform other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned to him/her from time to time by the Line Manager. Essential Criteria Knowledge/Experience Be registered in the general division of the Register of Nurses maintained by NMBI. Have at least five years recent relevant post-registration nursing experience in an acute hospital setting and a minimum of two years nursing experience in Endoscopy. Have a recognised post-registration nursing course in Endoscopy nursing or a willingness to undertake the same. Hold an up to date ACLS course or a willingness to undertake the same.
