Job Summary:

Acute Medicine Consultant sought to lead the Acute Medical Admissions Unit at St James's Hospital, delivering safe, quality care and reducing hospital stays.

Job Description:

The Acute Medical Admissions Unit (AMAU) at St James's Hospital provides immediate and early specialist care to medical patients presenting to the Emergency Department. The principle aim is to deliver safe, quality care, reduce the potential for prolonged hospital stays, and facilitate a seamless and early effective discharge plan.

  • Deliver safe, quality care to medical patients
  • Reduce hospital stays and facilitate early discharge
  • Develop and implement pathways for early discharge and ambulatory care services
  • Work with the clinical lead for Acute Medicine to ensure best care for patients presenting with acute medical conditions
  • Participate in developing and undertaking all duties and functions pertinent to the Consultant's area of competence
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, managerial/administrative staff, and external agencies to facilitate discharge planning and continuity of care
  • Provide consultation in the Consultant's area of designated expertise
  • Develop additional subspecialist clinical services
  • Participate in the AMU Ambulatory Care and general medicine on-call rotas
  • Facilitate coordination, cooperation, and liaison across healthcare settings
  • Supervise and be responsible for the clinical work of non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs)
  • Support the implementation of standards for safe, quality care, timely diagnosis, and focused treatment
  • Participate in education and training of AMU and AMAU staff, medical, nursing, and other healthcare professionals
  • Participate in ongoing CPD programs, research, and audit

Requirements:

  • Clinical Care: Demonstrate the ability to provide a level of clinical care required by this post according to the standards and requirements set by statutory and regulatory bodies
  • Communication: Illustrate a high level of verbal and non-verbal skills to effectively communicate with and relate to patients, colleagues, hospital staff, and management
  • Administration & Management Skills: Demonstrate a satisfactory level of proficiency to enable the appointee to manage staff and service and interact with hospital management structures
  • Organisational Awareness: Provide evidence of knowledge and understanding of the structure and governance of this and similar organisations
  • Continuing Education: Demonstrate a proven record of undertaking CME and CPD
  • Audit: Provide evidence of undertaking and initiating audit and quality projects

Reporting:

Reports and is accountable to the relevant Executive Medical Director, Clinical Director for Medicine, and Departmental Clinical Lead.
