Job Title and Grade:Consultant Medical Oncologist Category of Contract:Public Only Consultant Contract 2023 (POCC23) Area of Assignment:St. Jamess Hospital- 37 hrs Trinity St Jamess Cancer Institute,Oncology Services, HOPE Directorate, St. Jamess Hospital The Trinity St James's Cancer Institute (TSJCI), the first of its kind in Ireland, builds on the long tradition of outstanding comprehensive cancer care delivered at Ireland's largest academic health campus at St James's Hospital in central Dublin, with the research and educational excellence of Trinity College Dublin, Ireland's leading university. Trinity St Jamess Cancer Institute is the first Irish cancer institute to be accredited by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI). At St. Jamess Hospital the HOPe Directorate oversees the delivery of services in the specialties of Haematology, Medical and Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care and Psycho-oncology. These specialties incorporate the National Centre for Adult Stem Cell Transplantation and National Centre for Hereditary Coagulation Disorders, as well the St Lukes Radiation Oncology centre located on the St Jamess site. Cancer genetics services are provided in the Medical Oncology division of the HOPE Directorate. The HOPe Directorate has strong links with the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit, the translational research laboratories in the Institute for Molecular Medicine on the St Jamess site and the Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust. The Oncology department in St. Jamess hospital is a well established one which delivers a service to the local catchment area and also at supra-regional and national levels. Currently the service consists of ten medical oncology consultants working in the department with varying commitments to medical oncology, cancer genetics, AYA and academia in addition to an associate specialist post. St Jamess is one of the largest providers of cancer care in the country, with particularly extensive programmes in lung, gastrointestinal, gynaecologic, head and neck, breast and lympho-proliferative cancers. Medical oncology services are cancer site-specialised. The Medical Oncology Service has strong research links with Trinity College, located on the St James's Hospital Campus. An academic appointment of Professor of Translational Oncology has recently been made to assist in the further development of academic links between SJH and TCD. Senior Clinical Nurse Specialists Oncology Liaison Nurses and advanced nurse practitioners complement the medical teams. The service consists of outpatient clinics, nurse led clinics, day care, inpatient admissions and consults. The appointee will also participate in the Oncology on-call rota on which currently operates on a 1:7 commitment. The ambition of the Trinity St Jamess Cancer Institute is to develop a comprehensive cancer centre with national services in genomics and immunology, to become a leading international institution for translational cancer research, and through its structure and national and international collaborative network to represent a standard bearer for Ireland internationally. The Medical Oncology Department at St Jamess hospital is integral to this vision with a strong departmental focus on the development of and recruitment to cancer clinical trials. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Carry out duties in accordance with the Standard Duties and Responsibilities as detailed in the Public Only Consultant Contract 2023. Provision of Oncology services at St. Jamess Hospital and act as a source of advice to clinical colleagues and NCCP on the area of Medical Oncology Provide clinical governance within the Medical Oncology service at St. Jamess Hospital Liaise with other Medical Oncology services in Ireland Liaise with oncology and clinical genetics colleagues in the development of clinical pathways, protocols and training initiatives. Act as Consultant Physician under the Board of St. Jamess and participate in the provision and administration of the Medical Oncology services for patients at St. Jamess. Co-ordinate provision of Medical Oncology services to patients at St. Jamess Attend relevant MDTs for the service and review and present data as appropriate Liaise with the services currently established at St. Jamess for the provision of oncology services. This will include liaison with the appropriate Medical and Surgical Departments, Haematology, Pathology, and Radiation Oncology with particular reference to the needs of the oncology service.. Develop and collaborate in clinical, laboratory or other research as appropriate to the specialty Maintain a programme of continuing medical education applicable to the responsibilities of the post Participate in teaching, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and conference commitments of the department and of the Hospital for medical, nursing and other staff. Partake in clinical audit programmes primarily within Oncology but also potentially within Clinical Genetics in conjunction with consultant colleagues and in accordance with the hospitals clinical governance structure and develop and maintain relevant audit programmes. Liaise with Counsellors, Cancer Nurse Co-ordinators and other relevant persons with responsibility for cancer care and prevention in the region. Work within the Hospitals governance and Clinical Directorate structure. Provide Oncology on-call and cross cover as appropriate at St. Jamess Hospital Attend and participate in meetings relevant to the division. Eligibility Criteria Qualifications and/ or experience Professional Qualifications This post is open to candidates who have specific training and work experience in the field of Medical Oncology and who hold Registration as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Registrar of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland, and have completed a Fellowship or equivalent training in Medical Oncology. The successful interviewee must be registered as a Specialist in the relevant specialty on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland before taking up appointment. A special interest in breast cancer is desirable. Skills, Competencies and/or knowledge Clinical Care: To demonstrate the ability to provide a level of clinical care required by this post according to the standards and requirements set by statutory and regulatory bodies, e.g. RCSI, RCPI, Medical Council, etc. Communication: To illustrate a high level of verbal and non-verbal skills in order to effectively communicate with and relate to patients and / or parents / family, colleagues, hospital staff and management. Administration & Management Skills: To demonstrate a satisfactory level of proficiency so as to enable the appointee to manage his/her staff and service and to be able to interact with and participate in hospital management structures as required. Furthermore, the appointee should demonstrate the ability to lead, supervise and be responsible for the clinical work of his / her multi-professional team. Organisational Awareness: Provide evidence of knowledge and understanding of the structure and governance of this and similar organisations Teaching: To demonstrate skills required for educational training to medical students, professions. Research: To demonstrate a proven ability and track record of engagement in research relating to the speciality. Continuing Education: To demonstrate a proven record of undertaking C.M.E. and C.P.D. Audit: Provide evidence of undertaking and initiating audit and quality projects. The appointee would be expected to have an interest in, and prior experience of health services related research, data management and audit would be valuable in order to support the ongoing academic activity of St James's Hospital.
