Job Description



Job purpose


To provide healthy, nutritious, child friendly food to children attending the service and their families.

Core Job Requirements

  • Plan and prepare nutritious and child friendly menus in consultation with the Line Manager and staff and children
  • To liase with the Line Manager in relation to the budgeting and economical use of food supplies, ensuring an adequate supply of stock is maintained and food is purchased as required.
  • To maintain hygiene and Health & Safety standards (H.A.C.C.P.) in keeping with current relevant legislation, regulations and best practice.
  • To interact with children and families in an appropriate manner.
  • To work in a flexible manner in relation to the needs of the service, providing assistance to other staff as appropriate.
  • To take into account any special dietary requests.
  • To produce foods that offer choice, variety and diversity to the children.
  • To plan and cost nutritionally balanced menus that are attractive and appealing to children.
  • To keep appropriate food safety records.
  • Take action when aware of unhygienic practices which may put the safety of food at risk.
  • To carry out a risk assessment annually within your areas of work in collaboration with others.

To be vigilant to any concerns regarding the protection and welfare of children and to bring them to the attention of your designated person in a timely manner, in keeping with the Barnardos Child Protection policy.



Person Specification



Personal Attributes

  • Ability to work and interact in a child central environment
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain Hygiene & Safety standards required by Health & Safety regulation.
  • Ability to demonstrate safe food handling practices.
  • Ability to maintain a high standard of personal and work place environmental hygiene
  • Ability to operate within and maintain the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points system
  • Ability to keep appropriate food safety records.
  • Knowledge of legal responsibilities to ensure food safety
  • Ability to carry out a Health and Safety risk assessment and put in place safety measures in the food area.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of cross-contamination and the hygiene practice necessary to prevent it.
  • Flexibility and adaptability is required for the post.
  • Knowledge of food safety signs.

Experience


Previous cook experience in a commercial or service environment desirable.

Qualifications


To have completed the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points training, and have reached the at least standard level 1-2 in Food Handler Competency Standards. This is necessary to move beyond the first point of the scale.

The post holder is initially assigned to work in the Barnardos Tivoli Service but may be required in the future to work in other locations in the area in line with organisational needs.
