Director of Data Engineering

Optum is a global healthcare company that delivers care and technology to help millions of people live healthier lives. We are seeking a highly skilled Director of Data Engineering to lead our data engineering team in Dublin or Letterkenny/Hybrid. As a Director of Data Engineering, you will be responsible for developing a new, cutting-edge big-data platform that supports advanced analytics and machine learning models to improve health outcomes for our members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor a talented team of data engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
  • Work with business units in Unitedhealthcare's affordability department to support advanced analytics & strategy teams data needs to help lower medical & pharmacy costs.
  • Collaborate with Data Science and Business Intelligence leaders to design and implement a secure, compliant, and scalable data infrastructure to support the organization's growing data needs.
  • Build common frameworks and best practices in code development, deployment, and automation/orchestration of data pipelines.
  • Identify, design, and champion process improvements throughout the processing lifecycle for data quality initiatives, data encryption, data de-identification, role-based data access, automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, and tuning and optimizing data processes for greater scalability.

Requirements:

  • MS/BA degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or other technology fields.
  • Proven track record of building and scaling high-performing data engineering teams.
  • Deep understanding of DevOps tools, Git workflow, and building CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong experience in data engineering leadership roles, preferably within the healthcare industry.
  • Strong experience in data architecture, data modeling, data warehousing, and big data technologies (Snowflake, Scala, Spark, PySpark, etc.) as well as cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Strong leadership qualities, including strategic thinking, problem-solving, cross-team collaboration.
  • A passion for innovation and a desire to make a significant impact on the healthcare industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in computer science, Engineering, Mathematics, or other technology-related fields.
  • Healthcare industry knowledge and experience.
  • Data engineering certifications.
  • Data virtualization tools and technology experience with tools like Python Dash, Tableau, R-shiny, etc.
  • Experience building statistical models using SAS or R.
  • ML and/or AI model development and deployment.
