Role Purpose: We are seeking an experienced Design Manager to lead and oversee the design requirements of our projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in structural engineering, particularly in steel design, and will be responsible for managing the detailing team, external designers where required, mentoring junior engineers and ensuring the delivery of high-quality value engineering design solutions within budget and time constraints. What you will be doing: Be responsible for design and design management for specific projects Lead Design and Design Management requirements at tender stage Provide technical and management assistance to design teams Lead on the development of business unit and Group wide functional documentation associated with design and design management Review submissions as directed for technical compliance, quality and completeness Allocate tasks to individuals/companies as required and maintain associated RAC. Review temporary works and ensure appropriate consideration of constructability and permanent works Monitor Information release, and check information issued is in line with the programme Monitor, co-ordinate, and manage the design by consultants, in-house teams, suppliers, interface contractors, and outsourced designers as appropriate Manage all design reviews and co-ordination strategy, ensuring a fully coordinated design. Manage change control Manage compliance with Standards and Client requirements, and assist in monitoring to ensure working to standard requirements Ensure an understanding of, and an influence on the contracts Design Consultants are working under including their fees, schedule of services, programme, and liabilities and warranties Review and comment/agree the payment applications from consultants and pass to the contract surveyor for processing and payment Represent the department when necessary at internal and external meetings and, in the absence of the Design Engineer, to be the focal point of contact within the department *This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Qualifications: Chartered Structural Engineer Bachelor's degree in civil engineering (BEng Hons), preferably with a Master's degree in Structural Engineering (MSc). Minimum of 10 years of experience in structural engineering, with a focus on steel design. Proficiency in structural design software such as Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Structures, FBeam, MasterSeries, and IdeaStatica. Strong understanding of design codes and standards. Proven track record in managing design projects and leading design teams. Required/Desirable Skills & Experience: Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. Strong leadership and team management abilities. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. High attention to detail and a commitment to delivering quality work. Extensive experience in steel design, including connection and temporary works design. Proven experience in managing design requirements for large-scale projects. Experience in mentoring and developing junior engineers. Involvement in professional committees or volunteer work within the engineering community is a plus.
