Ballymote Community Nursing Unit:
Ballymote Community Nursing Unit is registered to accommodate 32 male or female residents who require long-term residential care or who require short-term respite, convalescence or palliative care.
The nursing home is located in a residential area a short walk from the town of Ballymote.
The building is single-storey and is decorated in a home-like way.
The home has safe garden areas that are currently located and cultivated with raised beds and shrubs to make them interesting to residents.

Job Description:
Job Title: Director of Nursing
Reporting to: Regional CEO & Chief Nursing Officer on Clinical matters
Job Purpose: Ensuring that Ballymote Community Nursing Unit provides the highest standards of person-centred care to residents in accordance with regulations, associated legislation, HIQA standards, guidelines and professional codes and practices.
Main Responsibilities:
Service Management and Development:

Undertake the role and responsibilities of the Person-in-Charge in line with the Health Act 2007, related regulations and HIQA standards.
Oversee the organisation, management and operations of the Nursing Home.
Ensure that staff have competency assessments completed when required.
Responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
Liaise with external organisations to promote and maintain good working relationships and high standards of care for residents.
Responsible for all aspects of risk management and resident involvement.
Oversee financial expenditure and ensure value for money.
Endeavour to keep abreast of best practice and new ways of working.
Ensure that the provision of a high standard of care to residents and families is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of Ballymote Community Nursing Unit.
Oversee the delivery of resident care with all members of the multidisciplinary teams.
Effectively lead all staff in striving to achieve the mission and core values of the organisation.
Ensure delivery of a service that contributes to the wellbeing of residents through effective leadership, motivation and management of staff, volunteers and resources.
Lead the development of policies, procedures, guidelines and team practice to meet residents' needs in line with National Standards and best practice as laid down by HIQA.
Identify and manage gaps in service provision and opportunities for development within the service.
Participate in service planning with the Regional CEO and Chief Nursing Officer.
Ensure regular service reviews and audits are undertaken.
Undertake an annual review of the quality and safety of care delivered to residents with the Regional CEO and Chief Nursing Officer.
Facilitate inspections of the Nursing Home by appointed internal and external agencies.
Develop and implement action plans that promote service improvement and achieve compliance with the HIQA assessment framework for designated centres for Older People 2020.
Knowledge of the best practice guidelines published in the HIQA Fire Safety Handbook 2021 and oversight on implementation.
Adhere to An Bord Altranais professional standards including 'Professional Guidance for Nurses Working with Older People' (An Bord Altranais 2009).

Team Leadership & Human Resource Management:

Lead ongoing team building and development to ensure the Nursing Home provides excellent care.
Ensure support and supervision is provided to a multidisciplinary team of staff and volunteers, with regular performance and personal development appraisals undertaken.
Oversee staff communication and ensure regular team meetings are held and recorded.
Ensure adequate cover in the Nursing Home through operation of a comprehensive staff rota that considers residents' dependency needs.
Participate in recruitment and selection of staff and volunteers as required.
Ensure all new staff receive appropriate induction to their roles and work within the Nursing Home, including knowledge of HIQA standards and related policies.
Identify and manage shortcomings in performance of new staff and report to the CNO & Regional CEO in a timely manner.
Manage training needs of staff and maintain appropriate records.
Liaise with the CNO and Regional CEO to implement systems for human resource management.
Ensure all staff have access to the correct edition of all live policies and procedures, and that records of induction are maintained.
Promote the volunteering concept within the Home.

Management of Care:

Ensure person-centred care is provided in line with best practice, the Nursing Home's policies and procedures, and in accordance with National standards & regulations.
Manage resident referrals including assessment of care needs and ensure continuity of care for all residents.
Ensure a comprehensive, person-centred approach to risk assessment and management.
Ensure the needs of residents' families are met and supported as appropriate.
Promote a culture of vigilance for residents amongst staff.
Monitor, review and improve the quality of care and experience of residents on an ongoing basis.
Manage systems to ensure all notifiable events are recorded and reported to HIQA as required by National Standards.
Prioritize Health & Safety and Hygiene standards and enforce related policies and procedures.
Deliver a human rights-based approach to care and support, ensuring the human rights of people using services are protected.
Audit service provision/practices to ensure adherence to best practice and share lessons learned with the staff team and Regional Team.
Regularly review the 'Statement of Purpose' to ensure compliance with HIQA standards.

Administration & General Management:

Maintain communication between the Home and the regional office through liaison with the Regional CEO, Regional Superior, Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Financial Officer.
Record and report data and information on activities to the Regional office through the Regional CEO.
Adhere to confidentiality policies and promote a culture of confidentiality in the Home.
Ensure the maintenance and general care of the buildings, gardens and equipment.
Manage implementation and regular review of all relevant Policies and Procedures.

Financial Management:

Be responsible for controlling income and expenditure and keeping within agreed budget.
Familiarity with current management accounts for the Home and planned measures to address variances.
Prepare planned expenditure and seek approval/prioritisation.
Record and report required financial information to the Regional Office.
Promote and manage fundraising activity where applicable.

Stakeholder and Public Representation and Promotion:

Promote participation of residents and their families in planning and evaluation of care.
Support the CEO, Sisters and Regional Team to maintain good relationships with key stakeholders.
Identify and promote services of the Home to suitable referral sources.
Represent the organisation at relevant seminars and conferences regionally and nationally.

Requirements:
Knowledge/Experience:

Registered Nurse with Full Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) registration.
Evidence of continuous professional development.
Minimum 3 years in an Aged care setting at management level in health and social care.
Post registration management qualification in health or related field.
Excellent organisation and communication skills with fluent English.
Understanding of dementia and best practices in dementia care.
Experience in Quality Management and Audit.
Thorough knowledge of legislation governing services for older people including HIQA standards.
Understanding of other relevant legislation e.g.
Health and Safety, Employment legislation.
Service development and planning experience is desirable.
Human Resource Management experience and knowledge.
Financial management and budgetary experience.
Ability to develop relationships and liaise with external agencies.

Skills/Competencies:

Ability to plan and manage change.

Other Requirements:
There is a requirement to be on call out of hours and cover relevant shifts if necessary.
Three satisfactory references, Garda vetting, medical fitness declaration, proof of registration and qualifications, and explanation of suitable experience are required.
Flexibility to work different rotas including shift-work is essential.
