JOB DESCRIPTION Directorate Nurse Manager (DNM) - Perioperative Directorate Reference No: 09.001 (2024) Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) is one of Ireland’s largest acute teaching hospitals, with 456 inpatient adult beds and a Day Surgery Centre located near the Hospital which has four theatres and 25 bays for elective surgery. The Hospital has over 3,500 people on staff with over 60 different nationalities represented on the team. The Hospital is a provider of local, regional and national specialties and is part of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group which serves a population of over 1.2 million across seven counties. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE The Directorate Nurse Manager (DNM) is a key member of the Directorate Management Team providing operation and clinical leadership within their areas of responsibility. The role of the DNM is to: Support the Director of Nursing & Integrated Care in leading the nursing service, and to lead and develop the Perioperative Directorate in collaboration with the Clinical Director and the Operations Manager. Promote an environment for professional nursing practice consistent with the mission, vision, values, and strategy of the Hospital. Support the Director of Nursing & Integrated Care and senior nursing executive to deliver on the principles of the Nursing Strategy 2022-2027. Deliver on agreed key performance indicators in the Perioperative Directorate to support and ensure the delivery of the highest standard of patient-focused nursing care throughout the Hospital. Be accountable and professionally responsible to the Director of Nursing & Integrated Care and report on overall performance of the Directorate to the Clinical Director. Lead the Assistant Directors of Nursing and CNM 3s in the Perioperative Directorate. Deputise for the Director of Nursing & Integrated Care as required. Work in close collaboration with members of the Executive Management Team, the Clinical Directors, nursing and medical staff, Perioperative Directorate Operations Manager, Senior Managers, and Department Heads. QUALIFICATIONS 1. Each candidate must: Be a Member of the General Division of the active register of the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). Possess a post-graduate qualification at not less than level 8 on the HQAI framework in the area of healthcare or management related area. Have at least seven years recent post-registration nursing experience, with three years nursing management experience at a minimum of ADON grade in an acute setting. Have demonstrable ability to analyse, report on, and effect change in nursing practice. Have significant experience in nursing manpower planning including recruitment and retention. Experience in management of a large complex budget. Have the clinical, managerial, and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role. Demonstrate evidence of continual professional development. Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Have proven clinical and managerial ability with vision and leadership skills to lead and manage the nursing and services agendas in line with the HSE, Department of Health, and the Dublin Mid Leinster Hospital Group (DMHG) strategic goals. 2. Age Restrictions In Relation To Applications Age restriction shall only apply to a candidate where they are not classified as a new entrant. Health A candidate for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service. 4. Be of good character. 5. Garda Vetting Garda Vetting is sought for all employees and prospective employees of TUH. Your appointment will be subject to satisfactory Garda Vetting and re-vetting as deemed appropriate by the Hospital. PARTICULARS OF OFFICE 1. The appointment is full-time, permanent, and pensionable. 2. Remuneration: Remuneration is in accordance with the salary scale approved by the Department of Health & Children. Current remuneration with effect from 1st June 2024 is: €84,804 by seven increments to €99,151 Salary scales will be updated in line with nationally agreed pay agreements. 3. Hours of work: Normal working hours are 37.5 worked over 5 days. As part of the Senior Leadership Team, you will also be required to work on-site at weekends on a rostered 5/7 basis. 4. Duties: The Directorate Nurse Manager will perform such duties as outlined in this job description. 5. Probation: The successful candidate will be appointed initially for a probationary period of six months. 6. Annual Leave: Annual leave entitlement is 28 working days, plus 10 Bank Holidays per annum as they occur. GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY Maintain awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all hospital activities. Encourage recognition of the patient as an individual, ensuring patients’ needs and comfort are given priority. Work within the NMBI Scope of Practice. Comply with all existing hospital policies, procedures, and guidelines. Demonstrate knowledge of the Hospital/Departmental emergency plans. Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the Hospital. Report on overall performance of the directorate to the Clinical Director. Ensure the provision of the most efficient and effective standard of services possible within the available resources. Promote an environment for professional nursing practice consistent with the mission, vision, values, and strategy of TUH. SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITY Key roles and responsibilities: Provide strategic, operational, and clinical leadership and direction for nursing and related services. Develop a shared sense of commitment among staff in the management of change. Ensure expenditure is controlled within budget and identify potential areas for cost savings. Accept responsibility for the management of all nursing services over a 24-hour period. Keep the Director of Nursing & Integrated Care/Clinical Director appraised of significant developments. Promote and maintain the values expressed in the Vision and Mission Statements of TUH.
