Job Description

Medical Scientist, Chief (Histopathology) sought for Letterkenny University Hospital, a teaching hospital with links to the University of Galway and the Royal College of Surgeons, to lead the Histopathology Department and ensure high-quality patient care.

  1. Lead the Histopathology Department with a focus on quality and patient care.
  2. Participate in the development of services within the laboratory in liaison with the Chief Medical Scientist and Service Manager.
  3. Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the hospital's mission and values.
  4. Maintain patient confidentiality and observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or hospital information.
  5. Be responsible for the quality of their work and carry out duties in accordance with hospital policy.
  6. Participate in the work of all department sections, both routine and specialised Cellular Pathology.
  7. Keep the Pathology Department Manager appraised of any significant developments within the Histopathology Department.
  8. Take day-to-day responsibility for planning, prioritising and supervising the work of a section or subsection of the department.
  9. Ensure the performance of assigned work is to the highest professional standard, in accordance with ISO 15189 and laboratory SOPs.
  10. Be responsible for the performance, maintenance, condition, quality control and record keeping of all instruments within the section.
  11. Manage consumables and reagent stocks supplies associated with the section.
  12. Contribute to the evaluation, procurement, validation and implementation of new analytical equipment, methods and software.
  13. Maintain and improve quality in the department by participating in and facilitating Quality Assurance and Audit.
  14. Participate in laboratory meetings and contribute to effective communication within the department.
  15. Ensure compliance with international and national guidelines and participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance.
  16. Ensure all policies in relation to record keeping are followed.
  17. Be familiar with electronic information systems and information technology systems within the department.
  18. Undertake suitable training and development programmes as required.
  19. Be familiar with the Health and Safety policies of the hospital and ensure they are followed to maintain a safe working environment.
  20. Co-operate with Consultants, the Service Manager and participate in the introduction of new ideas and methods.
  21. Behave at all times in a manner appropriate to your profession and the obligations and constraints of the post.
  22. Carry out the Major Emergency Plan for isolated incidents of multiple trauma as required by hospital policy.
