BROTHERS OF CHARITY SERVICES IRELAND WEST REGION POST: TEMPORARY POOL /LIFEGUARD, LEISURE CENTRE ATTENDANT, SPECIFIC PURPOSE CONTRACT FOR ONE YEAR KILCORAN LEISURE CENTRE, CLARINBRIDGE, CO GALWAY JOB REF: 153/2024E Brothers of Charity Services Ireland West Region provide a range of day, residential, respite and individual supports to 1,700 people with intellectual disability. The Brothers of Charity Services operate a Leisure Facility in Kilcornan, Clarinbridge. This consists of a Swimming Pool and Hall which was opened in 1975 and at present supports 2000 users each week including people with a disability, local schools and members of the public. The primary purpose of Kilcornan Leisure Facility is to support Individuals with an Intellectual Disability and their families by providing a safe and supportive leisure facility to meet their needs. It also supports schools, clubs and the wider community in the area. Income generated from these activities helps to sustain the viability of the complex and assist in meeting the needs of the local community. Fostering inclusion and positive support of local communitys activities has always been a keystone of the Services provided. This in turn has enabled us to support people with disabilities to be involved in activities with the local community. The complex is adapted to support the access and specialist needs of people with a physical, sensory and intellectual disabilities. Location of position: Kilcornan Leisure Centre, Clarinbridge, Co. Galway Reporting/Responsible To: Leisure Club Facility Manager / Area Manager/Sector Manager Qualifications/Experience: Applicants must have a good general education. A Certified Lifeguard qualification and swimming instructor experience is essential together with relevant experience of working in a leisure facility. Experience of working with persons with an intellectual disability is an advantage as is that of working with community groups. The Role: The successful applicant will be responsible for working alongside the Leisure Facility Manager in overseeing the day to day management and running of the facility. They will ensure the health and safety of all users of the facility, and also provide life guard duties to support user of the pool. They will promote the facility and work closely with community groups, schools and drama groups and will collect and be responsible for accounting income, which is used to maintain the viability of the facility as well as ensuring that the facility supports the needs of people supported by the services and their families. Skills: Lifeguarding Skills Swimming instruction Ability to co-ordinate and run the facility, Interest and enthusiasm for promoting sports and good health Good IT Skills Willingness to support and understand People with an Intellectual Disability and a willingness to be flexible in meeting their specific needs Ability to work in teams and liaise, co-ordinate and communicate effectively with staff of the Brothers of Charity Services, Clubs Organizations, Schools and members of the public who use the Leisure Facility Excellent communication skills communication and team-working skills, together with an enthusiasm for the post. Be able to work on own initiative, have attention to detail and exercise good judgement, discretion and confidentiality. The ability to explain things in simple manner such as safe use of equipment Working Hours: 78 hours per Fortnight based on a 14 day duty roster with evening and weekends been part of the schedule. Contracted hours are liable to change between the hours of 8am 10pm. Flexibility will be required in order to meet service needs. Tenure: This post is Temporary full-time and pensionable with contract for an initial period of one year to replace a staff members leave. Annual Leave: 22 days pro rata per annum, i.e. 8.46 hours per 100 hours worked Remuneration: €32,473 x 8 increments - €41,488(max) Pro Rata Per Annum. Probation: A probationary period of six months from the date of appointment applies to the post. The employment may be terminated at any time during the probationary period should the employer find that the appointee is unsuitable to continue employment. The probation period may be extended at the Employers discretion. JOB DESCRIPTION The Brothers of Charity model of service is based on Personal Outcome Measures requiring employees to be flexible both in their approach and their working hours to provide a quality service delivery for each individual. Specific Conditions: Staff must have a positive attitude towards working with persons with an intellectual disability and help to ensure that they lead as normal and enjoyable a life as possible. Staff must treat each person with an intellectual disability as an individual and at all times acknowledge and respect the rights and personal dignity of the person with an intellectual disability. Staff are required to establish and maintain relationships with adults and children with disabilities that are based on respect and equality and that promote their independence. Staff must adhere to the National Quality Standards for People with Disabilities (Health Information and Quality Authority) Main duties and responsibilities: Be responsible for the running and safety of all people in the Kilcornan Leisure Centre during those times when he/she is the lifeguard on duty. Be responsible to take bookings in pool and hall to ensure good use of both facilities which are used by sports groups, drama music musical, arts and theatre groups. Make sure that all Groups using the facilities produce have letters of Indemnity for Brothers of Charity Ireland and The Congregation of Brothers of Charity 14 days in advance of taking bookings. Liaise with staff of the Brothers of Charity Services in supporting people in the use of the facility hall and pool. Liaise with other Organisations and Clubs including Special Olympics Clubs in supporting people with disabilities in the area and organise and promote special events in conjunction with manager. Work closely with the Kilcornan Foundation Group to develop and improve the leisure facilities within the complex and grounds. Promoting the use of the facility and developing its business. Ensure the facilities and meet excellent customer standards and accept and acknowledge feedback on the facilities. Make sure that all payments for the use of facilities are made and recorded and oversee the financial records and accounts for the facility. Make applications where advised for grants or complete applications for other funding opportunities to benefit the facility and individuals using the facility. Be responsible for controlling numbers using the facilities at any one time and update the facility calendar to maintain an overall timetable and calendar of events and bookings and be responsible to accept new bookings from all Groups using the facilities. Assist People Supported and staff members to enable People Supported to use the facility. Carry out duties as a lifeguard in the pool and ensure that adequate skills, competencies and training required are updated regularly and to maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to carry out the role effectively. Be responsible to carry out the safety checks and maintain the hygiene and cleanliness in the pool& hall, the dressing rooms and toilets. Ensure that all health and safety obligations and considerations are upheld at all times and appropriate records of essential measures are maintained Maintain an overview of the maintenance of the facility and all equipment used in the facility and liaise closely with the Maintenance Department of the Brothers of Charity and external contractors to ensure that the facility is well maintained and good standards are upheld and servicing of equipment is carried out and arranged within the proper time frames. Ensure that Filters are backwashed twice weekly Ensure that all elements of the pool plant is checked regulations. Liaise with Health and Safety Authorities and the Environmental staff of the HSE and Galway County Council to ensure that regulations are met and good standards of practice are upheld and promoted Ensure that regular water testing and chlorination of the Pool are maintained to the required standards in accordance with the approved standards. Ensure that users of the pool and hall are generally observing the rules and regulations of the pool &hall with regards to order, health and safety. Ensure that all Groups using the Pool have a full and in date certified lifeguard on duty at all times. Work with Health Promotion Officers in arranging group activities and health related activities in the hall. Use all personal protective equipment provided. Ensure that pool water is kept at recommended temperatures. Ensure that the plant room is kept in a safe and tidy condition. Co-operate with management in implementing an effective accident and emergency plan which is reviewed regularly. Maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to carry out the vital service of life-saving including up to date training in First Aid and CPR/Defib training. Ensure that all childrens groups have adequate Child Protection Policies and measures in place and ensure that child protection measures in the changing rooms. Ensure that all swim teachers and lifeguards have been Garda vetted. Co-operate with and facilitate other staff and Persons Supported needing to use the pool in the course of their work. Provide advice and instruction to Persons Supported and staff who use the pool for therapeutic and leisure purposes. Ensure safety and that all doors to the swimming pool area are securely locked when the pool is not in use. Use his/her best endeavours to promote good public relations for Brothers of Charity. Operate within the Policies and Procedures of the Service in all aspects of work. Carry out any other task or duty as may reasonably be requested in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. All duties must be carried out in person at all times. Be aware of and become familiar with fire drill procedures, i.e. fire detection, evacuation and firefighting. Make sure that the clarity of the pool water is kept at all times. Be aware of the Normal Operation Plan and the Emergency Action Plan. Make sure that the Pool& Hall and Canteen areas are kept clean for use at all times. Be conscious of Health & Safety matters in the workplace and, in particular, to comply with employees obligations as set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act. Ensure that all accidents/incidents to the Persons Supported, staff and visitors are reported promptly to the Manager and on the AIRS Database. Ensure that the First Aid box is fully stocked and in date. Ensure confidentiality in all matters concerning Persons Supported. As the duties and responsibilities of any post in the Service are likely to change with the ongoing needs of the Persons Supported, i.e. age, level of disability, etc staff are expected to have a high level of flexibility, willingness and an ability to develop new approaches to their work as the Persons Supported needs demand. The role of the post holder will not be limited by reference to this job description. It would be expected that the role will evolve as professional, community,structural and Person Supported demands and the post holder will be expected to demonstrate flexibility skills that will facilitate this.
