Job Description

Cumann Lthchleas Gael (GAA) is Irelands leading sporting and cultural organisation, with nearly one million members and over 500,000 active participants across all levels. Rooted in its amateur ethos and supported by a dedicated volunteer base, the GAA commits its resources to developing Gaelic games and culture in communities nationwide. We are currently recruiting aNational Head of Hurling to lead the growth and development of Hurling across Ireland, with a particular focus on the Tin Region, which includes parts of Ulster, Connacht, and Leinster. The successful candidate will drive initiatives to foster the promotion and development of Hurling, while working collaboratively with key stakeholders including the Camogie Association. This role presents a unique opportunity to shape the future of one of Irelands oldest sports by leading national and regional strategies, enhancing participation structures, and ensuring alignment with the GAAs strategic objectives. Key Responsibilities: Alongside relevant stakeholders, lead the formulation and subsequent implementation of a strategic plan to support the promotion and development of Hurling nationally with particular emphasis on the designated Tin Region that encompasses parts of Ulster, Connacht and Leinster. To work closely with the Camogie Association in the identification, development and delivery of common programmes and club start-ups in line with their strategic objectives around growth and participation of Camogie in the designated Tin Region. To provide strategic leadership to the wider Games Development County planning and operational processes by ensuring there is alignment with national Hurling objectives to include the identification of key investments. Using demographic and other insights, design and implement a programme to foster and grow the number of clubs actively playing Hurling across all Counties. Lead and drive improvements in structures to enhance participation and planning in existing Hurling clubs. Lead the development of programmes and initiatives to grow and enhance the game specifically in middle and top tier counties in partnership with Counties and Provinces Work with Camogie Association in optimising the Intangible Cultural Heritage Status of Hurling and Camogie. Work with the national Participation & Programmes Team in the planning of inter-county, club and school competitions and participation related programmes. Review and monitor inter-county and internal county games programmes to ensure that players at adult and youth level have the opportunity to participate in an adequate and appropriate programme of games Provide support to the Coach and Player Development Team in the delivery of coach education programmes aimed at improving coaching standards at each stage and level of the coaching pathway. Work with Communications and Marketing Departments to enhance the promotion and awareness of the game and related initiatives. To support the World GAA team in the planning and delivery of the Shinty Competition between Ireland and Scotland. Work with National, Provincial and County Leadership in the allocation and monitoring of resources to support the growth of Hurling ensuring funding invested realises stated objectives. Responsible for the preparation and management of relevant annual budgets, including the management of the Hurley and Helmet Scheme. Responsible for the line management of a national corps of Hurling development officers at provincial and county levels aimed at growing the game in club, school and inter-county settings. To provide updates to an Coiste Bainistochta, Ard Comhairle, Games Development Committee, Hurling Development Committee and other stakeholders on a required basis. Prepare an annual report on the provision of fixtures for clubs, schools, and inter-county levels for consideration by the National Fixtures Analysis Committee, CCCC, DCCC, HDC, HEC and Post-Primary Council. Essential Criteria: A third-level degree in a relevant associated field (Level 7 NFQ or above). A minimum of 3 years experience in a similar role, either in a voluntary or professional capacity. Wide experience in managing and co-ordinating sports events and/or competitions. Experience of working with key partners including schools, national governing bodies of sport, and school sports associations. A passion for Gaelic Games and an understanding of the structures and culture of the GAA. Clear and detailed knowledge of the GAAs coaching schemes and initiatives. Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong ability to work effectively as part of a team. Excellent communication (written and verbal) and presentation skills. Strong organisational skills with the ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities to tight deadlines. Own car, clean driving licence, and willingness to travel for meetings and events. Desirable Criteria: Experience working within the GAA, particularly in a development or operational capacity. Understanding of the cultural significance of Hurling and Camogie.
