Met ireann recognise that climate change is one of the most pressing global issues of our time. The provision of climate information services is a key objective of Met ireanns Strategic Plan 2017-2027. Fundamental to the delivery of this service is the availability of high-quality weather and climate records. Met ireann maintains the National Climate Archive, a repository of paper and digital climate records dating from the early 1800s to the present day. Many of our records of extreme events were catalogued in an earlier era when climate change was not to the forefront of society. As the occurrence of more frequent extreme weather events grows, there is more importance placed on recorded archives and verification of extreme record events. In order to enhance and standardise Irish climate records Met ireann are recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher to re-evaluate and analyse national records. The outcome of this project will be a verified, well documented, high-quality digital repository of extreme weather events for Ireland. Your work on this project will provide critical insights for climate modelling, inform policy decisions, and contribute to global efforts in mitigating and adapting to climate change. The primary role of the successful candidate will be to develop a robust, high-quality database of extreme events of temperature, rainfall, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and sunshine for Ireland. The successful candidate will be based at Met ireann Headquarters located at Glasnevin Hill, Dublin 9. Where possible, the successful candidate may be authorised to partly work remotely, in line with government approved policies for workplace attendance.
