This framework is designed to provide significant professional development opportunities to Researchers and offer the best opportunities in terms of a wider career path.Dr Gary Lawrence and Dr Tom Zurawski of the Molecular Neurobiology and Therapeutics Laboratory and DCULife Sciences Institute (LSI) investigate the role of membrane trafficking in peripheral nervous system function and dysfunction in health and diseased conditions, and as a target for therapeutic intervention using naturally occurring and proprietary inhibitors of membrane fusion. Through an Industry sponsored research collaboration, the opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to study neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity in the murine parasympathetic nervous system, a model relevant to the development of targeted therapeutic interventions for neurosecretory disorders, such as hyperhidrosis, sialorrhea and uncontrolled lacrimation.Principal Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:Neurophysiological assessments of natural and proprietary inhibitors of nerve functions.Recombinant protein expression in E. coli and purification.Electrophysiological recordings to assay neurotransmission.Maintenance of transgenic mice colonies and performance of simple surgical procedures.Maintenance of records for regulatory compliance.Preparation and presentation of semi-annual reports to the research sponsor.Minimum RequirementsApplicants must have a PhD in Neuroscience, Cell Biology, or a related discipline.In addition, it is desirable that candidates have experience in one or more of the following:Recombinant protein expression and purification.Behaviour assessments in rodents.Electrophysiological recording and data analysis.Immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, and image analysis.CompetenciesDiscipline knowledge and Research skills: Demonstrates knowledge of a research discipline and the ability to conduct a specific programme of research within that discipline.Understanding the Research Environment: Demonstrates an awareness of the research environment (for example funding bodies) and the ability to contribute to grant applications.Communicating Research: Demonstrates the ability to communicate their research with their peers and the wider research community (for example presenting at conferences and publishing research in relevant journals) and the potential to teach and tutor students.Managing & Leadership skills: Demonstrates the potential to manage a research project including the supervision of undergraduate students.The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR) and all Cyber Security Awareness Training.
