No Offer DescriptionApplications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of Natural Sciences/Ryan Institute at the University of Galway, Ireland.This position is funded by SFI and is available from November 11th 2024 to contract end date of 19th December 2024 (extension under negotiation).As part of the TAPAS project, we are looking for excellent candidates with a PhD in Earth Observation Science, Remote Sensing, Physics, Astronomy or Applied Mathematics and a solid background in both applied computing applications and in data analytics. The successful candidate will work as part of the AI Team of the TAPAS project in the development and application of machine learning based models to infer soil moisture from earth observation synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, and to use this information to identify anomalies in soil moisture in biomass production. The position involves working with the AI Team Lead to deliver a working prototype platform that generates moisture index maps at multiple spatial and temporal scales for specific sites under scrutiny by the TAPAS team. Such work will involve the development of deep learning models and associated statistical methodologies to derive below ground soil moisture estimates from SAR data, the generation and archiving of the resulting global/local maps, and the development of a GUI/API system to facilitate access to these data for interested third parties.Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €44,346 - €56,764 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.Closing date for receipt of applications is 17:00 (Irish Time) on 24th October 2024.
