Power Generation Engineer Role Summary

Power Generation Engineer responsible for designing, developing, and implementing innovative energy solutions for AWS data center power generation and transmission infrastructure.

Job Responsibilities

As a key member of the Datacenter Engineering Power Generation Solutions team, you will:

  • Capture requirements and develop well-defined, achievable, and testable specifications and solutions.
  • Design and construct utility-scale generation plants, energy storage systems, and associated substations.
  • Develop design proposals that meet or exceed quality requirements and fall within budgetary constraints.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to create construction document sets.
  • Participate in site selection reviews and work with local utilities, developers, and grid operators to define interconnection requirements.
  • Work with internal teams to understand user/customer requirements and with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify electrical equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with IEEE/ANSI, UL, IEC, EU requirements and building codes.
  • Review and approve equipment submittals, including test and commissioning requirements.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to and during research and development projects.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with people from various technical backgrounds.
  • Produce clear and concise documentation, such as detailed design specifications, functional test scripts, reports, and version release notes.
  • Safeguard implementation of the Global Electrical and Mechanical Basis of Design (BoD) through constant auditing.
  • Travel to sites for site reviews and work with onsite field engineers, as needed.
  • Oversee construction, maintenance, and upgrade projects using project management skills.
  • Work with control systems, SCADA, and other power plant automation technologies.
  • Manage concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience with design and operation of utility-scale power plants in a utility or project development company.
  • Understanding of US ANSI, UL, NERC, FERC, NESC, and European EN & IEC standards.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations, including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Knowledge of Carbon Neutrality and Global Net-Zero Carbon Objectives.
  • Knowledge of Greenhouse Gas and Global Air Quality Emissions Reduction techniques.
  • Technical expertise in relay protection schemes, HV & MV circuit breakers, power and distribution transformers, electrical switchgear, grounding, and earthing schemes.

Preferred Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you will need:

  • Master's degree or higher in electrical engineering.
  • 7+ years of relevant design experience deploying utility-scale power plants across the United States.
  • Direct experience with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of generation plants, nuclear plants, energy storage assets, and substations.
  • Understanding of mechanical equipment and system design.
  • Experience with fast-track design/build projects and/or multiple significant upgrade projects.
  • Experience with Hyperscale Distributed Energy Projects, including Battery Energy Storage, Long Duration Energy Storage, Fuel Cells, Solar, and Wind.
  • Experience with designing, deploying, operating utility-scale power plants and interconnections.
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and high-quality standards.
