Seeking an experienced Principal Ecologist to lead ecological teams in Dublin, driving forward ecological services, overseeing environmental projects, and providing expert advice on biodiversity, conservation, and sustainability initiatives.

Contact Ciaran Hall, the consultant managing this role. ATG are seeking an experienced and passionate Principal Ecologist to lead an ecological team based in Dublin. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in driving forward ecological services, overseeing a range of environmental projects, and providing expert advice on biodiversity, conservation, and sustainability initiatives.

The Principal Ecologist will lead project delivery, manage client relationships, mentor junior staff, and ensure regulatory compliance. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of ecological consulting in Dublin and beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage ecological surveys, assessments, and biodiversity plans for a variety of projects, including infrastructure, construction, and land-use developments.
  • Provide expert ecological advice on planning applications, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), Habitats Directive Assessments (HDA), and other environmental consents.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of high-quality ecological reports, including mitigation strategies, biodiversity action plans, and species protection plans.
  • Manage and develop client relationships, acting as the key point of contact for ecological matters, ensuring clear communication and project updates.
  • Lead and mentor a team of ecologists, supporting their professional development and fostering a collaborative and innovative working environment.
  • Ensure all projects comply with Irish and EU environmental regulations, including Natura 2000, the Wildlife Acts, and the Planning and Development Acts.
  • Collaborate with internal teams such as planners, engineers, and environmental specialists to provide integrated solutions that balance development and ecological considerations.
  • Stay up-to-date with advancements in ecological best practices, environmental law, and policy changes in Ireland and Europe.
  • Undertake business development activities, including preparing tenders, identifying opportunities for new work, and expanding the ecological service offering.
  • Represent the company at public consultations, stakeholder meetings, and industry events.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, or a related discipline (postgraduate qualification preferred).
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in ecological consultancy or a similar role, with a proven track record in project management.
  • Full membership of a professional body such as the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or equivalent.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Irish and EU environmental legislation, policies, and guidelines.
  • Demonstrable experience in leading and delivering Ecological Impact Assessments (Ec IA), Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA), and other related ecological reports.
