Principal Engineer Job Description

The Ireland Roads Team is seeking a Principal Engineer with extensive post-professional qualification experience in the design and project management of road schemes and active travel schemes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage projects to ensure coordination and compatibility of multi-disciplinary inputs on projects of varying scale, complexity, and value.
  • Liaise with clients, develop strong trusted relationships, proactively manage their expectations and comprehensively advise them.
  • Undertake project technical lead and reviewer roles.
  • Prepare fee proposals and manage budgets for individual projects.
  • Be responsible for the development and delivery of discrete and overall project solutions.
  • Lead and manage other staff members in the delivery of design drawings, standard construction details, specifications and bill of quantities.
  • Responsible for compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation and in-house quality assurance standards/processes.

Requirements:

  • Project management and technical delivery lead of Road or Public Transport/Active Travel schemes, with experience of Transport Infrastructure Ireland/National Transport Authority/Local Authority procedures essential.
  • Experience of contract document preparation or contract administration/site supervision using Public Works Contracts.
  • A chartered member of a relevant engineering technical institution.
  • Experience or knowledge of alignment and drainage design software packages such as Civil3 D/Open Roads/MX and Win Des preferred, but not essential.
  • Good communication, client management and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Chartered Civil Engineer or an Incorporated Engineer with extensive post-professional qualification experience.
  • A thorough understanding and application of current design standards including; Urban Street and/or Active Travel Design (i.e. Design Manual for Urban Roads and Streets - DMURS, Traffic Signs Manual, Cycle Design Manual etc.), Highway Geometric Design (i.e. Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) Publications) and also TII and NTA Project Management Guidelines.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills.
