Job Summary: Professor and Head of the Department of Anatomy & Regenerative Medicine at RCSI, responsible for leading the department's vision and strategy, teaching, research, and administration.


Department of Anatomy & Regenerative Medicine is seeking a Professor and Head to lead the department's vision and strategy, drive innovation and delivery of teaching programmes, and conduct research in anatomy and related areas.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and collaborate on the development and implementation of the Department's vision and strategy, aligned with RCSI's strategy
  • Manage the efficient administration of Department's strategy and plan
  • Provide effective leadership to Department staff, inspire, motivate, develop and mentor the existing team throughout their career stages
  • Build on and foster a collaborative team culture
  • Lead a diverse team of academic, administrative and technical professionals
  • Engage with and collaborate with other Departments in RCSI with regard to the planning and execution of education and research projects
  • Drive the services and standards of the Department as a whole and ensure it is fully resourced with efficient processes and capable, suitably qualified and motivated staff members
  • Actively adapt plans to keep pace with RCSI's and students' emerging needs and priorities, and research opportunities
  • Work collaboratively with RCSI Department colleagues and across Departments
  • Represent the School and RCSI on such committees and external bodies as may be appropriate

Innovative Teaching:

  • Lead and manage anatomy curriculum development and teaching of undergraduate students
  • Contribute to the development of anatomy modules for graduate students in Physician Associate Studies and Graduate Entry Medicine, and for professional postgraduate programmes in anatomy for trainee surgeons, radiologists and other health professionals
  • Develop the Department's and RCSI's innovative teaching modalities including Simulation and explore new emerging teaching technologies including Virtual Reality and AR
  • Ensure the Department continues to actively contribute to the accreditation and delivery of existing programmes and the accreditation of any new programmes

Ground-breaking Research:

  • Attract and manage translational research grants, and develop international and/or industry collaboration, to further enhance the research reputation of the University, the Department and the Irish Anatomy community
  • Ensure the departmental research strategy aligns with that of the RCSI and will support new appointments aligned with enhancing the research reputation of the Department and University

General Academic Responsibilities:

  • Lead a Department of over 80 people, comprising 13 full-time and 14 part-time academic staff, two administrators, four technical staff and over 50 researchers
  • Participate in the administration and delivery of current teaching programmes, teaching modalities and assessment in anatomy and biology for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students and trainees
  • Secure funding so as to sustain a research group of postgraduate students and other research staff, with resultant publications in journals of high quality impact
  • Foster industry-academia interactions and commercialization of research findings
  • Contribute to the development and introduction of new teaching programmes, innovative teaching modalities and modes of assessment
  • Liaise with colleagues across RCSI international campuses in the facilitation of research and teaching activities
  • Be responsible for ensuring that the RCSI Anatomical Examination and Anatomical Gifts Programme fully complies with Irish legislation, the Irish Medical Council and operates to the highest standards
  • Oversee quality assurance regarding donor consent, premises, facilities, equipment, record keeping, traceability and sensitive disposal of remains
  • Supervise undergraduate students and postgraduate students at Masters, MD and Ph D levels
  • Participate in the development of RCSI's teaching and learning strategy including the effective use of technology-enhanced learning
  • Contribute to quality assurance/quality improvement and accreditation of existing modules
  • Represent the best interests of the Department and RCSI at all times to enhance RCSI's reputation in the field and build collaborations
  • Undertake overseas assignments as may be required from time to time
  • Perform such other related duties as may be required

Academic Competencies:

  • Strong teaching interest and skill set, as evidenced by experience of, a proven track record in, and enthusiasm for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and assessment in Anatomy and/or related areas
  • Competitive research record, on an international level, as evidenced by grant application success, and peer reviewed publications in journals of high quality impact and grant support in areas of emerging and strategic relevance to RCSI

  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in the face of new opportunities, evolving strategies and / or uncertainty
  • Be able to lead innovation in relation to teaching and research approaches
  • A strong interest and active record in developing an innovative research agenda and collaborations and in leading large grants
  • Track record in successful supervision of MD/Ph D students

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in medicine, anatomical sciences, biomedical engineering, or related disciplines
  • Ph D or equivalent qualification in anatomical sciences, regenerative medicine, biomedical engineering, drug delivery or related disciplines
