Job Description

Schools Officer Saint Patrick's Cathedral has been at the centre of our history and culture for over 800 years. Dating from the 13th century and built in honour of Irelands patron saint, Saint Patricks is the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland and is also one of Irelands most popular tourist attractions. With over 600,000 visitors in 2023, it is the third most visited admission-charging tourist attraction in Dublin city. We now wish to recruit a Schools Officer to join our Education dept. The Cathedrals Education Department are responsible for the design and delivery of an education programme to visiting schools/ education groups. This free programme is utilised by approximately 5000 students each year and includes Primary schools, Secondary schools, Third level Colleges and community groups. The Education Department has two staff (including this position), but also utilises a panel of freelance facilitators in the delivery of education programmes. The Schools Officer will report to the Education Officer who will provide support and advise in the development of this aspect of the Education Departments work. The Schools Officer will manage all aspects of the provision of the schools programme. Role requirements: Minimum of 3 years working directly with children in a classroom or workshop setting Excellent understanding of Irish educational system and curriculum requirements Minimum of 2 years experience in tour guiding and interpretation of museums, historic buildings, or other heritage/cultural sites (experience in historic cathedrals is a plus) Minimum of 1 year experience in volunteer recruitment and management Minimum of 1 year experience in recruiting, training, and managing freelance facilitators Excellent graphic design skills, with previous experience using a number of platforms including but not limited to: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and Canva (Portfolio examples?) Experience in website management Excellent communication skills, with an ability to adapt communication style according to audience size and ability. Previous experience working with children in an education/childcare setting Experience of delivering education sessions, tours and workshops to students (particularly school age students) Experience in managing online bookings and reservations Masters degree in a History, Heritage, or Education field Providing tours, workshops and other education sessions to visiting education groups. Working with the Marketing Department to help grow the number of education groups visiting each year. Dealing with all enquiries and/ or other administration relating visiting education groups. Designing new education sessions which help to keep the education programme fresh and help to entice new schools to visit. To manage the recruitment and training of education facilitators, both paid and voluntary to assist with the delivery of education sessions. Creating drop in activities and/ or education sessions aimed at families for mid-term breaks and/or summer holidays Any other work which the Education Officer deems necessary The Schools Officer will have responsibility for developing, offering and ensuring the quality of education programmes to visiting schools, third level institutions, and community groups. Thid role is primarily an on-site position The working week is primarily Monday to Friday, however there should be a willingness to work bank holiday weekends from time to time This is currently a stand-alone role, and a collaborative approach with colleagues, and external freelance facilitators in the delivery of education programmes would be expected.
