Galway City Council consists of 18 Members elected every five years, the most recent local elections having taken place in 2024. The city is divided into 3 electoral areas: Galway City East, Galway City Central, and Galway City West Ward.

At a strategic level, the Council operates through its Corporate Policy Group comprising the Mayor of the City and the Chairs of the local authority's six Strategic Policy Committees. The Chief Executive and the Council's Management Team play a key role in supporting and advising this policy group.

Day-to-day management of these services takes place under the stewardship of the Chief Executive, four Directors of Service, and a Director of Finance.

An opportunity now exists for the position of Senior Architect at Galway City Council.

The role of the Senior Architect is to lead the Architectural Services Department and play a central role in the development of Galway City as a sustainable European city in terms of best practice architecture and urban design. The Senior Architect reports to the Director of Urban Development, or such designated person(s) who may be assigned from time to time.

The holder of the post will have excellent design skills and architectural competencies. They are expected to have an excellent knowledge of current building control processes, health and safety, planning and procurement legislation, as well as construction contract administration and project management. They will oversee the delivery and supervision of a high-quality architectural service to a diverse client base and work collectively with various departments within the Local Authority, other state agencies, and the local community.
