Job Description

Senior Data Scientist - 18 Month Contract

Apple is a place where extraordinary people gather to do their best work. Together we build products and experiences people once couldn't have envisioned - and now can't imagine living without.

We are seeking an experienced senior AI Scientist with a focus on optimisation to drive the design, development, and deployment of AI-based solutions for supply chain decision-making.

This role requires deep expertise in optimisation techniques and AI, with a proven ability to solve complex industry challenges.

The Senior Data Scientist will lead the creation and implementation of AI-driven optimisation solutions aimed at improving strategic, tactical, and operational decisions in supply chain management.

The role involves applying advanced optimisation techniques, commercial algorithms, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to align technical solutions with business objectives.

Mentoring junior team members and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement will be central to this position.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the design and deployment of AI-driven optimisation solutions for supply chain decision-making.
  • Applying techniques such as linear programming, mixed-integer programming, and constraint programming to create scalable solutions.
  • Customising commercial optimisation algorithms to address unique business challenges.
  • Collaborating with business stakeholders, data scientists, and engineers to optimise workflows.
  • Mentoring junior team members in optimisation and fostering a culture of innovation.
  • Translating complex business objectives into mathematical models.
  • Proactively addressing bottlenecks in optimisation to balance performance, cost, and efficiency.
  • Managing stakeholder expectations in ambiguous environments while driving impactful solutions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph D in Artificial Intelligence, Operations Research, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience applying AI and optimisation techniques to solve complex industry problems.
  • Expertise in optimisation methods such as constraint programming, linear programming, mixed-integer programming, heuristics, and meta-heuristics.
  • Proficiency with solver libraries, and related (e.g., CP solvers, Gurobi, CPLEX, or custom solvers).
  • Proven experience leading optimisation projects from conception to deployment.
  • Strong mentoring skills, fostering team proficiency in optimisation methodologies.
  • Ability to navigate complex environments and manage stakeholder expectations effectively.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with a proven track record of delivering efficiency-driven solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with optimisation in supply chain, logistics, including transportation, inventory, and network design.
  • Familiarity with simulation techniques and integrating optimisation with machine learning models.
  • A passion for research, innovation, and optimizing real-world systems for business impact.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships and promote knowledge-sharing across teams.

Apple is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to inclusion and diversity. We take affirmative action to ensure equal opportunity for all applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, Veteran status, or other legally protected characteristics.
