Senior Geotechnical Engineer - Road/Rail Projects


Location: Sandyford, Dublin

Employment Type: Permanent

Work Location: Office Based / Hybrid

Pay: Salary Negotiable

Our client is an award-winning international engineering consultancy, currently undergoing rapid growth.

Key Responsibilities:


  1. Identifying preliminary geotechnical risks for projects and option selection analysis
  2. Planning, procuring and controlling site investigation contracts for major infrastructure and commercial development projects to manage geotechnical risks
  3. Advising the structures teams on the design parameters for shallow and deep foundations for buildings, bridges, etc.
  4. Designing complex foundations to Eurocode EC7, including pile groups and soil-structure interaction problems
  5. Interacting with transportation and environmental colleagues to improve routes, drainage requirements, flood defences, and coastal protection works
  6. Preparing the earthworks to Eurocode EC7 by producing contract documents, including specifications, design drawings and reports
  7. Supporting Category 3 check designs of geotechnical design packages
  8. Assessing borrow and quarry materials for reuse as embankment fill, drainage, concrete, and pavement aggregates for mass haul analysis
  9. Pavement foundation design in accordance with TII / UK DMRB
  10. Assessing and designing soil improvement techniques for soft ground, including surcharge, vertical drains, vibroflotation, geosynthetic reinforcement, geosynthetic encased columns, piled embankments, mass stabilization, rolling dynamic compaction, lime/concrete subgrade stabilization
  11. Assessing peat stability and access road drainage and services for upland developments, such as windfarms, etc.

Requirements:

  • B.Sc in civil engineering/engineering geology
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Irish/UK glacial till soils, including major road/rail projects
  • Knowledge of construction techniques for piles and retaining walls is essential
  • Proficient knowledge and work experience using finite element modeling of soil-structure interaction problems (Plaxis)
  • Knowledge of quarry/borrow materials used as aggregates and pavement design
  • Construction experience in earthworks, soil improvement, and deep foundations

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Post graduate qualification MSc or PhD in geotechnical engineering or related field
  • Chartered Engineer
  • Membership of a recognised professional body in the geotechnical field in UK/Ireland
  • Full Driving Licence
