When applying please ensure you state the specialty and grade MED Directorate The Medicine and Emergency Directorate, (MED), which includes all specialties in Internal Medicine, was established in 2014 and has consolidated all specialties of medicine within a single clinical governance structure. Its mission, aims and objectives focus on safety, (zero harm), quality, (excellent outcomes), patient experience, access and flow. The Directorate has agreed a clinically-led management cycle for continuous improvement for adoption across its specialties. Clinical Specialty Leads have been appointed with a common structure and data-driven approach to specialty and directorate operations meetings. SACC Directorate The Surgery, Anaesthesia and Critical Care Directorate (SACC) focuses on the surgical patient process from outpatients through to discharge. Core principles are based around delivering a safe, personal, clinically effective and high quality service to all patients, with clear accountability for all staff members. St. Jamess Hospital delivers a wide range of surgical services at a local, regional and national level. There are 13 Specialities within SACC. These are; Urology, Gynaecology, General Surgery, ENT, Breast Care, Maxillofacial, Vascular, Plastics, Orthopaedics, Cardiothoracic, Pain Management, Anaesthesia and Critical Care. The directorate is managed by the Directorate Management Team led by Clinical Director and Operations Manager. Regular engagement with the Clinical Teams through Leads for each Speciality has been a big focus in 2015, with the establishment of Monthly Speciality Meetings. The main purpose of these was to improve communication, address operational issues and at a strategic level, set out a development plan for each service. Department of General Medicine The division of internal medicine at St. Jamess Hospital is primarily focused on the care of acute emergency medical admissions. We are aligned with the objectives of the acute medicine programme and as well as having a busy clinical service we have a vibrant research function and contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate clinical education. Professional / Clinical The post holder will: Work under consultant supervision to lead the resuscitation of all critically ill and injured patients Liaise effectively with other specialty teams in relation to patient referrals Supervise handover at the end of each shift. Balance service demands with their personal educational needs and those of the doctors and medical students they supervise Be supportive of junior staff, ANPs, nurses and other team members Participate in clinical risk management, audit and research activities Comply with departmental clinical guidelines Support by the Consultants and their Registrar colleagues. Comply with departmental leave policies and procedures Demonstrate appropriate levels of professionalism in all aspects of your work and behaviour Be responsible for assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment for patients according to professional standards and under the supervision of the Consultant Communicate results of assessments and recommendations to the patient and relevant others as appropriate Foster close working relationships with colleagues and other relevant professionals in maximising the patients potential Participate in teams, communicating and working in collaboration with the patient and other team members as part of an integrated package of care Attend clinics and participate in relevant meetings, case conferences and ward rounds; followed by documentation of findings on each patients chart; follow through with actions arising from the round In conjunction with the Supervising Consultant, contribute to the development and implementation of procedures, policies and guidelines while adhering to existing standards and protocols Maintain professional standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics and legislation Seek advice and assistance from the Consultant with any assigned cases or issues that prove to be beyond the scope of his / her professional competence in line with principles of best practice and clinical governance Participate in audits and research Engage in technological developments as they apply to the patient and service administration Education and Training The post holder will: Participate in mandatory and recommended training programmes in accordance with organisational / professional requirements Maintain and develop professional expertise and knowledge by actively engaging in continuing professional education and development Engage in planning and performance reviews as required with the SupervisingConsultant Health & Safety The post holder will: Comply with the policies, procedures and safe professional practice of the Irish Healthcare System by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards Document appropriately and report any near misses, hazards and accidents and bring them to the attention of relevant / designated individual(s) in line with best practice Work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the safety of self and others Be aware of risk management issues, identify risks and take appropriate action Promote a culture that values diversity and respect Administrative(In consultation with the supervising Consultant) The post holder will, in consultation with the Supervising Consultant: Ensure good working practice and adherence to standards of best practice Promote quality by reviewing and evaluating the service, identifying changing needs and opportunities to improve services Assist theConsultantin service development, including policy development and implementation Ensure the maintenance of accurate records in line with best clinical governance, the organisations requirements and the Freedom of Information Act, and provide reports and other information / statistics as required Engage in service audit and demonstrate the achievement of the service objectives Represent the department / profession / team at meetings and conferences as appropriate Keep up to date with change and developments within the Irish Health Service The above Job Description is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all duties involved and consequently, the post holder may be required to perform other duties as appropriate to the post which may be assigned to him/her from time to time and to contribute to the development of the post while in office. Eligibility Criteria - Qualifications and/ or experience Applicants are expected to have completed Basic Specialist in the relevant speciality. Possession of a post-graduate qualification (eg MCEM, MRCS, MRCP), will be advantageous to the candidate, but is not a requirement for the post. Candidates are expected to be ATLS or ACLS providers. Core requirements for this post include: a demonstrable commitment to General Medicine, good decision making, a broad clinical knowledge base and appropriate clinical skills, awareness of patient safety and risk management issues and the ability to work efficiently under pressure and as part of a team.
