Job Description

The Staff Midwife will practice midwifery according to the Code of Professional Conduct, comply with national and local Health Service Executive guidelines, and maintain a high standard of professional behavior. Responsibilities include delivering midwifery care, fulfilling statutory obligations, and promoting the health and wellbeing of women and babies. They will also participate in clinical governance, education, and administrative tasks such as record management and health and safety protocols. Key skills include the ability to work independently and as part of a team, providing a quality service, and having strong communication and influencing skills. Candidates must be registered with the Nursing Board and have the clinical and administrative capacity to discharge the functions of the role. **Key responsibilities include:**


  • Delivering midwifery care to women and babies according to best practice and evidence-based frameworks.

  • Maintaining a high standard of professional behavior and being accountable for their practice.

  • Participating in clinical governance, education, and administrative tasks.

  • Ensuring the health and wellbeing of women and babies.

  • Working closely with the multi-disciplinary team and external agencies to facilitate discharge planning and continuity of care.

  • Developing and promoting good interpersonal relationships with patients, their families, and the multi-disciplinary care team.

  • Providing education and information to women and their families as required.

  • Reporting and consulting with senior midwifery management on clinical issues as appropriate.

  • Maintaining accurate written midwifery records and reports regarding women's care.

  • Participating in innovation and change management in the approach to patient care delivery.

  • Participating in clinical audit and review.

  • Undertaking the role of key worker as coordinator of the primary care team as required.

  • Delegating and supervising the work of other grades of midwifery and midwifery support staff within the remit of their role.

  • Referring patients to other services as required.

  • Initiating and undertaking approved clinical midwifery research.

  • Participating in national code of discharge planning.

  • Having a working knowledge of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) Standards as they apply to the role.

  • Participating in clinical governance structures within the local regional national clinical governance framework.

  • Contributing to ongoing monitoring audit and evaluation of the service as appropriate.

  • Accurately recording and reporting all complaints to appropriate personnel according to local service policy.

  • Participating in the development of policies procedures and guidelines to support compliance with current legal requirements.

  • Participating in the development of policies procedures and guidelines with health safety risk and management personnel.

  • Observing reporting and taking appropriate action on any matter which may be detrimental to patient care or wellbeing.

  • Being aware of the principles of clinical governance including quality risk and health and safety and being individually responsible for clinical governance risk management health and safety issues in their area of work.

  • Complying with HSE policies to minimise risk with particular reference to infection control domiciliary visits and lone working.

  • Participating in the development promotion and implementation of infection control guidelines.

  • Assisting with the decontamination process.

  • Adhering to organisational dress code.

  • Attending mandatory training courses.

  • Keeping abreast of the latest developments in midwifery practice as far as possible.

  • Developing and using reflective practice techniques to inform and guide practice.

  • Participating in the clinical workplace induction of new midwifery and support staff.

  • Contributing to the identification of training needs pertinent to the practice area.

  • Developing and maintaining competence in the area of preceptorship.

  • Providing support guidance and advice to junior colleagues when required.

  • Participating in regular performance clinical reviews with their line manager.

  • Participating in the development of performance indicators.

  • Ensuring that records are safeguarded and managed as per HSE local policy and in accordance with relevant legislation.

  • Maintaining records and submitting activity data furnishing appropriate reports to the Director of Nursing as required.

  • Contributing to policy development and formulation performance monitoring business planning and budgetary control.

  • Ensuring the ward department is maintained in good order using appropriate models that supplies are adequate and that all equipment is in good working order and ready for immediate use.

  • Assisting in the maintenance of necessary equipment and ordering of supplies as required to ensure a safe environment for patients staff and visitors.

  • Ensuring that the appropriate and efficient use of supplies and exercising economy in the use of consumables.

  • Coordinating the management of the unit in the absence of the Clinical Midwife Manager.

  • Being aware of all health safety issues as identified through the risk assessment process within the Safety Statement.

  • Complying with all policies procedures safe work practices pertaining to your work area by adhering to the Safety Health and Welfare legislation and associated regulations.

  • Ensuring you take reasonable care to protect your safety health and wellbeing and that of any other person who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work.

  • Documenting as per the HSE DNE Incident Reporting Policy any near miss or accident.
