Job Description

The School of Natural Sciences wishes to appoint a Technical Officer to support and strengthen the Schools existing research and teaching activities. The post will enhance interdisciplinary teaching and research across the School (Disciplines of Botany, Geography, Geology and Zoology, and the Centre for the Environment) and also support the Schools close links with the two other E3 Schools: Engineering and Computer Science and Statistics. The role will support E3 activity and the transition to the new shared E3 Learning Foundry. At undergraduate level, technical support is required in our teaching programmes in Geography and Geoscience (TR062), Environmental Science & Engineering (TR064), Geography (Joint Honours), and the Botany, Environmental Sciences and Zoology streams in the Biological & Biomedical Sciences (TR060) programme. At postgraduate level, technical support is also necessary for our taught MSc programmes in Biodiversity & Conservation, Environmental Sciences, Smart & Sustainable Cities, and Development Practise. The post holder will join a team of technical officers reporting into the Chief Technical Officer for that team. The successful role-holder will operate within a busy office and laboratory environment, involving daily collaboration with internal college offices and support services, institutions and regulatory bodies, and will be an active participant in various College, School and Discipline-level activities. Provision of technical support for research and teaching activities in the field is an important aspect of the role. The role holder must be motivated, dynamic and possess excellent interpersonal skills and a proactive attitude to high quality work with strong attention to detail. The role holder will also benefit from access to opportunities for continued professional development with the School placing a strong emphasis on continued training and professional development. Post status: Permanent Hours of Post: 36.5 hours per week Salary: Appointment will be made on the Technical Officer Pay Scale Salary Scale) at a point in line with Government Pay Policy (€38,345 to €58,576 per annum) New Entrants to the Public Sector will be appointed on Point 1 of the Scale, €38,345 per annum Qualifications for New Staff (from 1 January 2007) Entry to the profession will require relevant Honours degree. National Certificate on Entry- Qualifications for Existing Staff (before 1 January 2007) The preferred candidate if an MSc holder on entry, with a minimum of 3 years experience (that must be relevant), may be appointed at Senior Technical Officer level.
